7 Mistakes Everyone Makes When Flying from Málaga Airport (And How to Avoid Them)

23/09/2026

We've all done it. Arrived late, left the contact lens solution in the hand luggage or set off without booking the parking. Here's how to not do it again.

Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport is one of the busiest in Spain. Millions of passengers pass through it every year — and a fair number of them make the same mistakes, trip after trip. Not because they're careless, but because travel involves a lot of details and it's easy for one or two to slip through.

If you recognise any of the following, don't worry. You're in very good company.

Mistake #1: Not booking your parking in advance

The classic of classics. "I'll sort something out when I get there." And yes, there'll be something — but not always what you want. During peak season, bank holidays and busy weekends, covered spaces at private car parks near the airport get reserved days or weeks in advance.

The added complication: Málaga gets sun practically all year round. Even in autumn or spring, leaving your car parked outside for several days can take its toll on the interior. In summer it's a whole other level. A covered space booked in advance is the difference between coming back to a car and coming back to an unpleasant surprise.

The fix: book in advance at Parking San Isidro — takes two minutes from home, and payment is made when you collect the car. No stress, no surprises.

Mistake #2: Underestimating how long it takes to get to the airport

"The sat nav says 25 minutes. I'll leave 40 minutes early and have loads of time." Sure. On a Tuesday morning in February, with no traffic and a tailwind. The problem is that flights don't tend to leave under those conditions.

Access to Málaga Airport can get badly congested during peak season — particularly from the A-7 and from the city centre. Add parking time, getting to the terminal, checking in baggage and going through security, and that 40-minute buffer becomes a thriller.

The fix: build in proper margin. For international flights, aim to be at the airport at least 2 hours before departure. If you're leaving your car at a private car park with a shuttle, add just 3 minutes — which is how long the Parking San Isidro shuttle takes to reach the terminal.

Mistake #3: The liquids disaster

You've been looking forward to this trip for months, you pack with care and excitement, you reach security and... the officer looks at you with resigned pity as they remove your favourite cologne, your 200ml moisturiser and the shower gel that wouldn't fit in the small toiletry bag.

The rule is clear but has a catch: hand luggage only allows liquids in containers of 100ml maximum, all inside a transparent resealable plastic bag of maximum 1 litre. It's the size of the container that matters, not how much is left inside — if the bottle says 200ml even with only 30ml in it, it goes.

The fix: buy 100ml travel bottles, use the regulation bag, and if in doubt, move anything that might cause a problem to your checked luggage.

Mistake #4: Queueing to check in when you could have done it online

The check-in queues at Málaga Airport in August are something nobody needs to experience twice. And yet there are always people who arrive without having done online check-in, family in tow, as though time is something they have plenty of.

Most airlines allow online check-in 24 to 48 hours before departure. If you're not checking in baggage, in many cases you don't need to go near a desk at all.

The fix: do online check-in as soon as it opens, download your boarding pass on your phone, and go straight to security.

Mistake #5: Not preparing for the security check

Security is not a surprise — everyone knows it exists — but some people arrive as though they've never seen an airport scanner in their life. Coat on, large belt buckle, laptop buried in the bag, coins in every pocket and a couple of water bottles in the tote.

Result: one tray, the bag, another tray, shoes, jacket, another tray for the laptop, back through because of the belt... and the queue behind watching with the expression of people who deeply regret not taking the train.

The fix: prepare before you get to the scanner. Coat off, laptop easy to reach, pockets emptied into your bag, liquids in the regulation bag and accessible. Two minutes of preparation saves ten minutes of everyone else's patience.

Mistake #6: Not checking the car before leaving it for several days

You leave the car at the car park for ten days and come back to find the battery is flat, a tyre has lost pressure, or — worst case — that you left a window slightly open and the interior smells like anything but a holiday.

You don't need to be a mechanic to do a basic check. Battery in good shape, correct tyre pressure, windows properly closed, a bit of fuel in the tank and, if travelling in summer, a covered space to protect the car from the sun.

The fix: follow our car preparation checklist before flying — ten minutes before leaving home that save a nasty surprise when you get back.

Mistake #7: Panicking when the flight is delayed

You get to the airport, look at the board and see those two words nobody wants: "Delayed. New time: TBD." And the first thought, after the initial sinking feeling, is: "What do I do about the parking?"

If your car is at a well-run private car park, the answer is simple: nothing. The car is exactly where you left it, under surveillance, and when you finally land you call and they come and collect you. At Parking San Isidro payment is made when you collect the car, so extra days are charged at the normal rate — no surcharges, no surprises.

The fix: choosing the right car park before you travel is the best decision you can make to stop unexpected problems becoming actual problems. Read more in our post Flight Delayed? Your Car Is Still in Good Hands.
